Rising Number of Problems in Tbilisi from Gastric Mini Bypass Surgery: Lack of Experience, Soviet-Era Education Culture, and Unprepared Doctors for High Patient Volume

Introduction: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of deaths in Georgia associated with gastric mini bypass surgery, also known as mini-gastric bypass. This phenomenon has particularly escalated between 2020 and 2024, with approximately 8,000 patients opting to undergo surgery in Turkey instead of Georgia.

Lack of Experience: The primary reason behind this rise is the lack of experience among doctors in Georgia in handling gastric bypass surgeries. It poses significant challenges, especially for young doctors who may not be equipped to manage a large volume of patients.

Soviet-Era Education Culture: The education culture in Georgia also contributes to difficulties in patient care. Older-generation doctors educated under Soviet-era systems may struggle to adapt to modern surgical practices and the complexities involved in managing post-operative complications effectively.

Unprepared Doctors: Many doctors in Georgia are simply not prepared to handle the complexities and risks associated with gastric mini bypass surgeries. This unpreparedness has led to adverse outcomes and an increasing reluctance among patients to undergo such procedures locally.

Conclusion: As a result of these factors, Georgia has seen a significant exodus of patients seeking safer and more experienced surgical care abroad, particularly in Turkey. Addressing these issues would require improvements in medical training, better support for surgical practices, and a shift towards modern, evidence-based medical education.
